SimBionic® is an award-winning AI toolset designed to help you build better training simulations. SimBionic is a key part of Stottler Henke’s Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) technology platform and has been employed to provide coaching, automated after-action review (AAR), and automated role-players in a wide variety of training simulations.

Automated Student Evaluation

Simulation-based training is effective because it offers the student the chance to actually practice the skills being taught in an appropriate context. The effectiveness of training simulations can be further enhanced by having an instructor on hand to coach the student and review the student’s performance. However, it is often not feasible or cost-effective to have a human instructor available for every student. One alternative is to add an automated coaching component to the training software that can monitor the student’s actions in the simulation and provide feedback. SimBionic provides tools to help you build such capabilities into your training simulations.

In particular, SimBionic makes it easy to create evaluation machines, which are flowchart-like bits of logic that monitor the student and determine when he or she has correctly or incorrectly exercised a particular skill being trained. SimBionic’s visual editor enables instructional designers and subject matter experts to create and understand these evaluation machines without any programming expertise. The SimBionic runtime engine then executes these evaluation machines while the student runs your simulation, automatically detecting correct or incorrect student performance and notifying your training system so that it can take appropriate action.

Automated Role-Players

In many domains, multiple people are required to run a training simulation for a single student. These people play the part of teammates, adversaries, or other characters that the student must interact with in the simulation. The additional cost and scheduling difficulties associated with these extra role-players often limits the availability of training for students.

Using SimBionic, however, you may be able to replace some or all of these human role-players with automated equivalents. SimBionic is specifically designed to simplify the process of capturing complex decision-making and behavior logic so that it can be simulated by characters within games or simulations.
